ZESCO PUT DENT IN BLADE’S SURVIVAL WITH 1-0 AT NCHANGA
Konkola Blades 0-1 Zesco United
Last time Zesco played Blades, Lazarus Kambole and Idris Mbombo were the underhanded stars of the show. The players used every dark art in their possession to secure victory early on this season.
This time there wasn’t much underhandedness required. As Jackson Jesse Were decided the contest with a spot kick just before half time.
Yes, that’s ‘winning’ — Zesco United earned a 1-0 victory at Nchanga Stadium, giving United their ninth of the season, enough to go fourth and relegate Lusaka Dynamos to fifth.
Consider this: Blades’s chances to equalise after going down 1-0 was no where near possible as it looked like only one team was playing
Even before the penalty, there didn’t seem to be much in this Blades side as their players spent most of the 90 minutes helpfully guiding the ball out of play.
After going down, Blades now had to attack , and their speedsters on the wings didn’t seem to have much clue as to how to damage Zesco United. With no focal point to worry about, Zesco seemed content enough to cede the flanks whenever the hosts did come forward (in the first half, not often), and it’s somewhat telling that the only team destined to win that encounter was one from Ndola.
Looking at the scoreline, you’d have to say that Zesco failed to take it, but in truth they were extremely close to blowing it open.
Zesco United didn’t need to score again to win, so Zlat and friends were perfectly fine to burn through the last minutes without finding the net. Indeed, so was Jesse Were — full time found him wandering around near the corner flag, daring Blades to come try to take the ball away. Blades couldn’t, and Blades didn’t.
Call it a grinded result but the position of Zesco in this unpredictable season will be the admiration of of each team below them!
THEY ARE UNITED
