Kenya international defensive midfielder Anthony Agai Akumu was hit by irate fans and sustainad an injury on his right eye while on duty for his side Zesco United away to Horoya City in the CAF Champions League in Conakray,Guinea on Sunday 20.
The extent of the injury has not yet been communicated.
Horoya hoped to reverse a 4-1 first leg loss to the Zambian side, but could only score two goals, all from the spot, when they needed three to sail through on away goal advantage.
As the match grew thin, the home fans got more and more frustrated and started throwing missiles into the field of play hurting the former Gor Mahia midfield dynamo.
“The officiating was very bad and the atmosphere was very tense in the sudium. At half time and in the second half when they saw their team could not score Horoya fans started throwing stones at our players and one of our player Akumu was injured. The team is at the hotel now. We fly out at 06 30hrs local time 08 30hrs Zambian time.” Zesco posted on their Facebook page.
Zesco played the better part of the tie a man less after Cletus Chama was sent off in the 44th minute for a second bookable offense, however they managed to hold on to the scoreline and secure a place in the last 16.
It remains to be seen what action CAF will take against Horoya as the continental football body is known to take stern action against such uncivillised acts.
Akumu is part of Kenya’s Harambee Stars final squad to play away to Equitorial Guinea on Wednesday 23 in AFCON 2017 Qualifiers.
The team jets off today morning.
At Soka25east.com we wish Akumu quick recovery.
