Ghana finished in third place at the 2016 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations after beating South Africa 1-0 in an entertaining match at Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo in Younde on Friday evening.
Linda Eshun scored the only goal of the game in the second half to ensure the Black Queens clinched bronze after the goalless first half.
Banyana were by far the better side in the first half and should have taken the lead on the half hour mark through Refilo with her header punched away by Pateicia Mantey denying South Africans an early lead.
Janine van Wyk also had a clear oppotunity four minutes to the break with a long range free kick but again the Black Queen’s keeper calmly collected the ball.
Black Queens pressed hard after the break troubling Banyana defence, enjoying the lion’s share of possesion with their efforts rewarded on 49th minute when Eshun rose high stretching her neck for a powerful header for the only goal of the match.
Ghana Black Queens failed to make it to the finals when they lost 1-0 to hosts Cameroon in their semi-final match and now have grabbed the bronze for the third time in AWCON.
Their two previous third place finishes were during 2000 and 2004 editions that were held in South Africa.
The tournament grand finale will be played tommorrow with nine time champions Nigeria and host Cameroon battling for the trophy.
