Egypt beat Côte d’Ivoire in 5-goal thriller to book Semifinal spot
Egypt defeated Ivory Coast 3-2 in a thrilling AFCON 2025 quarterfinal clash, with Mohamed Salah delivering a decisive performance that included a goal and an assist to send the Pharaohs into the semifinals.
The match at Adrar Stadium in Agadir began at a blistering pace. Egypt struck first in just the fourth minute, when Omar Marmoush capitalized on a defensive error by Odilon Kossounou to put the Pharaohs ahead. Ivory Coast struggled to settle into the game, and Egypt doubled their lead midway through the half when Salah delivered a pinpoint corner for Ramy Rabia, who headed home to make it 2-0. However, the Elephants clawed back before halftime, benefitting from an unfortunate own goal by Ahmed Fatouh that gave them hope going into the break.
Emerse Fae’s side came out stronger in the second half, determined to overturn the deficit. With the match finely balanced, Egypt’s talisman Mohamed Salah stepped up once again in the 52nd minute to restore the 2 goal cushion after latching onto a pinpoint cross by Eman Ashour. The goal not only highlighted Salah’s world-class quality but also shifted momentum firmly back in Egypt’s favor. Ivory Coast pressed hard and eventually goat their second goal, Guela Doué scoring from another setpiece to make sure of a dramatic finish.
Hossam Hassan’s tactical setup proved crucial in this contest. Egypt’s compact midfield restricted Ivory Coast’s creative outlets, while their quick transitions exploited defensive gaps. Ivory Coast, on the other hand, relied heavily on their physicality and wing play, but struggled to break down Egypt’s disciplined backline. The Pharaohs’ ability to absorb pressure and strike clinically was the defining difference between the two sides.
Beyond Salah’s heroics, Omar Marmoush impressed with his early goal and tireless work rate. Ramy Rabia’s aerial presence was vital, while goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shenawy made several crucial saves late in the game. For Ivory Coast, Amad Diallo was their standout performer, constantly probing Egypt’s defense and creating opportunities. Yan Diomande also posed a threat, but ultimately the Elephants lacked the finishing edge to complete their comeback.
With this victory, Egypt advanced to the AFCON 2025 semifinals to face Senegal, continuing their quest for a record-extending title. Ivory Coast, the defending champions, bowed out despite a spirited fight, leaving questions about their defensive frailties.
