Herve Renard appointed new Tunisia Head Coach

Hervé Renard has officially been appointed as Tunisia’s new head coach at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, replacing Sabri Lamouchi after the team’s heavy 5-1 defeat to Sweden. The Frenchman will lead the Eagles of Carthage for the remainder of the tournament, with talks of a possible long-term deal after the World Cup.

Tunisia’s campaign began disastrously with a crushing loss to Sweden, prompting the Tunisian Football Federation to act swiftly. Sabri Lamouchi was dismissed just one game into the tournament, a rare mid-World Cup managerial change. The decision reflected the urgency to salvage Tunisia’s chances in Group F, where they still face Japan and the Netherlands.

Hervé Renard is one of Africa’s most decorated coaches. He famously guided Zambia to the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations title and later won the same tournament with Ivory Coast in 2015. At the global stage, he earned recognition for leading Saudi Arabia to a shock victory over Argentina at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. His reputation as a motivator and tactician makes him a strong candidate to revive Tunisia’s fortunes.

The Tunisian Football Federation confirmed that Renard will remain in charge until the end of the 2026 World Cup, with negotiations planned afterward for a possible long-term project. His immediate task is to prepare the squad for their next fixture against Japan, a must-win clash if Tunisia hopes to stay alive in the competition. A press conference has already been scheduled to introduce him formally to the media and fans.

Renard inherits a squad low on confidence after the Sweden defeat. Tunisia’s defense looked fragile, and their attack lacked sharpness. His challenge will be to instill discipline, tactical organization, and belief in a team that has historically struggled to progress beyond the group stage at World Cups. With only two matches left, every decision he makes will be under intense scrutiny.

This appointment is significant not only for Tunisia but also for African football. Renard’s return to the World Cup stage underscores his enduring influence on the continent. If he succeeds in guiding Tunisia to the knockout rounds, it would mark a historic turnaround and reinforce his legacy as one of Africa’s greatest coaches. The move also signals Tunisia’s ambition to build a stronger long-term project, potentially keeping Renard beyond 2026.
