Germany score late to break Ivory Coast hearts

Germany staged a dramatic comeback to defeat Ivory Coast 2–1 in Toronto, with substitute Deniz Undav scoring twice — including a stoppage-time winner — to secure their place in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Franck Kessié had earlier given the Elephants a first-half lead.

Ivory Coast stunned the four-time champions by taking the lead in the 30th minute. Captain Franck Kessié pounced on a rebound after Amad Diallo’s strike was parried, slotting home clinically to put the Elephants ahead. Germany, despite dominating possession, saw two goals ruled out — one from Aleksandar Pavlovic and another from Kai Havertz — as VAR and referee decisions kept them trailing at halftime.

Coach Julian Nagelsmann introduced Deniz Undav in the 60th minute, a move that changed the game. Just eight minutes later, Undav volleyed in a superb cross from Nadiem Amiri to level the score at 1–1. The equalizer lifted German spirits, and they pressed relentlessly for a winner.

Despite conceding, Ivory Coast remained dangerous on the counterattack. Yan Diomande impressed with his pace and creativity, troubling Germany’s backline. Goalkeeper Yahia Fofana made several key saves, including denying Havertz early on, keeping the Elephants in contention until the final minutes.

In the 94th minute, Germany’s persistence paid off. Felix Nmecha threaded a precise pass to Undav, who calmly slotted a left-footed finish into the bottom corner. The strike sealed a 2–1 victory, sparking wild celebrations among the German players and fans.

With the win, Germany climbed to the top of Group E with 6 points, guaranteeing progression to the Round of 32. Ivory Coast, who remain on 3 points after beating Ecuador earlier, still have a chance to qualify but must secure results in their final group match. Ecuador and Curaçao sit bottom with zero points.

Germany showcased resilience and depth, with Undav proving to be their “super-sub.” His brace highlighted the squad’s attacking options beyond established stars like Havertz and Musiala. Ivory Coast, meanwhile, demonstrated tactical discipline and attacking flair but were undone by lapses in concentration late on. The Elephants will need to regroup quickly to keep their knockout hopes alive.
