Late Canada goal knocks South Africa out of FIFA World Cup
Canada defeated South Africa 1–0 in Los Angeles on June 28, 2026, thanks to Stephen Eustaquio’s stoppage-time strike, securing their first-ever FIFA World Cup knockout victory and a place in the Round of 16. South Africa’s brave run ended in heartbreak despite a resilient defensive performance.
Canada created several chances but were repeatedly denied by South Africa’s defense and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.
Moise Bombito’s header was cleared off the line by Aubrey Modiba, while Jonathan David was denied by a last-ditch tackle from Mbekezeli Mbokazi.
The breakthrough came when Alistair Johnston’s long ball was deflected into Eustaquio’s path. The midfielder controlled it on his chest and fired a half-volley into the bottom corner.
South Africa enjoyed 58% possession, showing composure and tactical discipline. Their defense held firm until the final minutes, frustrating Canada’s attackers. Forward Appollis tested Canadian goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau late in the game, but Bafana Bafana lacked the cutting edge to score.
Despite elimination, this was South Africa’s best-ever World Cup campaign, reaching the knockout stage for the first time.
Canada advances to the Round of 16, where they will face the winner of Netherlands vs Morocco on July 4 in Houston.
