Cameroon beat South Africa to advance to Quarterfinals

Cameroon defeated South Africa 2–1 in the 2025 AFCON Round of 16, securing a place in the quarter-finals against Morocco. Goals from Junior Tchamadeu and Christian Kofane gave the Indomitable Lions the edge, while Evidence Makgopa’s late strike was not enough for Bafana Bafana.


The Round of 16 clash between Cameroon and South Africa at the Al Median Stadium in Rabat was a tense, high-energy affair. Cameroon, despite being under pressure for long spells, showed resilience and clinical finishing to edge out South Africa 2–1. The victory booked their spot in the quarter-finals, where they will face hosts Morocco, while South Africa’s campaign came to an end.


South Africa started brightly, dominating possession and creating several chances, but Cameroon struck first against the run of play. In the 34th minute, Junior Tchamadeu broke the deadlock with a composed finish after a swift counterattack. Just two minutes into the second half, Cameroon doubled their lead through Christian Kofane, who capitalized on a defensive lapse to slot home in the 47th minute. South Africa’s persistence paid off late in the game when Evidence Makgopa scored in the 87th minute, giving Bafana Bafana hope of a comeback. The final minutes were frantic, with South Africa pushing hard for an equalizer, but Cameroon held firm under intense pressure. Despite six minutes of added time, the Indomitable Lions’ defense stood tall.

Ultimately, Cameroon’s efficiency in front of goal and defensive resilience proved decisive.
