DR Congo edge past Benin in Group D opener

DR Congo opened their Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Benin at the Stade El Barid in Rabat on Tuesday.

The decisive moment came early in the first half when Théo Bongonda struck in the 16th minute, finishing off a well-worked move that highlighted Congo’s attacking intent. The Leopards, buoyed by their passionate supporters, looked sharp in transition and capitalized on Benin’s slow start to the game.

Despite conceding early, Benin grew into the match and actually controlled more of the possession, registering over 60% of the ball. They pushed forward with Rodolfo Aloko and Aiyegun Tosin trying to create openings, but Congo’s defense, marshaled by Chancel Mbemba and Axel Tuanzebe, held firm. Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Arthur Masuaku provided width and defensive cover, ensuring that Benin’s attacks rarely translated into clear chances.

The second half was a tense affair, with Benin pressing harder for an equalizer. They had opportunities through Rachid Moumini and substitute Olatoundji Tessilimi, but their finishing let them down. Congo, meanwhile, relied on counterattacks led by Cédric Bakambu and Meschack Elia, nearly doubling their lead late on. Fiston Mayele came close with a long-range effort, but the score remained unchanged.

In the end, DR Congo’s early strike proved enough to secure all three points. The victory places them in a strong position in Group D, while Benin will rue missed chances and their inability to break down Congo’s disciplined backline. For the Leopards, the win is a confidence boost as they aim to progress deep into the tournament, while Benin must regroup quickly to keep their AFCON hopes alive.
