South Africa suffer defeat in World cup opener against Mexico

South Africa endured a 2-0 defeat against co-hosts Mexico in the opening game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City on Thursday.

Two beautiful goals and three red cards headlined a dominant display from the home side who were cheered on by 80,824 fans in a packed arena.

Mexico came out flying early on the blocks with Julian Qinones benefiting from a defensive lapse after a sloppy build up by South Africa at the back. Quinones slotted the ball through Ronwen Williams’ legs to send the home fans in a frenzy in the 9th minute.

South Africa was reduced to 10 men as Yaya Sithole getting his early shower for denying a goal scoring opportunity in the 50th minute.

Mexico took advantage of their extra man and doubled the lead with Raul Jimenez heading home in the 67th minute to all but seal the three points.

In a moment of madness Bafana Bafana saw Themba Zwane get a red card for an arm in the face with Mexico returning the favour as Cesar Montes was also dismissed in the 90th minute.

South Africa coach Hugo Broos gave his verdict and reaction to the loss

“I think we played a very good game except maybe the first 15 minutes of pressure from Mexico. I think we had some little chances in the match but after that I think after that Mexico became desperate. They didn’t find spaces, they didn’t find players, they played the back, they played their wait, but I think we did very good first half except that one moment we lost the ball on our 16.

“You can never dribble in that position. We lost the ball and there was space and they scored. Same thing second half, we lost the ball in the middle of the field at the moment we don’t have to lose that ball there. Okay normally it’s a penalty and a red card but the second red I am not so sure. I think it was the Mexican player that blocked Zwane. The referee saw it differently but I don’t think it was a red card.”

South Africa now shift the focus to their next game with Czechia on Thursday 18 June,2026
