DR Congo earn historical draw against Portugal
Portugal were held to a 1–1 draw by DR Congo in Houston, as João Neves’ early header was cancelled out by Yoane Wissa’s historic strike — DR Congo’s first-ever World Cup goal. Cristiano Ronaldo, appearing in his sixth World Cup, failed to score and extended his barren run in major tournaments.
Portugal struck early: In the 6th minute, Pedro Neto delivered a pinpoint cross that João Neves headed home, giving Portugal a dream start.
DR Congo responded: Despite Portugal dominating possession, the Leopards grew into the game. In stoppage time, Arthur Masuaku’s cross found Yoane Wissa, who headed in from close range to level the score. It was DR Congo’s first World Cup goal in 52 years.
Portugal thought they had regained the lead when João Cancelo scored with a bicycle kick, but it was ruled offside.
DR Congo nearly shocked the favorites when Cédric Bakambu hit the post in the 57th minute.
Cristiano Ronaldo, now the oldest outfield player to start a World Cup match (41 years, 132 days), missed two golden chances in the 68th and 73rd minutes, firing wide both times.
